Home Theatre

Manchester, UK

Capacity: 1000+ Seats

Formed out of the merger of some of Manchester’s best-loved arts organisations, Home Theatre is a new cultural centre that brings together theatres, cinemas, a gallery and a restaurant all under one very stylishly and distinctively designed roof. The first new facility of this type to be opened for some time in the UK, the centre’s setting is as dramatic, adventurous and provocative as some of the work and performances to be found within its walls.

SIS was awarded the contract for designing, manufacturing and installing the raised tiered floors along with over 1,000 theatre and cinema seats and the challenge was clear – to provide a seating solution that not only lived up to the building’s striking design but also satisfied the numerous practical considerations. In other words, a perfect blend of flair and function.

Designed in close partnership with the architect and client, a grand total of 1,023 seats were required across five different cinemas and one live performance theatre.

In Cinema 1, the presence of ducting and different concrete levels within the space required tiering to have a variable rise per row to accommodate a parabolic curve for optimum sightlines. While, in Cinema 2, the layout for tiering and seating incorporated a radial design to enhance the feeling of space. Cinemas 3, 4 and 5 were designed to offer a smaller and more intimate space and, as such, feature seats with arms to provide additional comfort.

For the live performance theatre, we were tasked with designing, manufacturing and installing job-specific structural steelwork to form the treads and risers into a radial layout for the lower and upper circles. One ingenious feature is the holes in the risers to facilitate air-flow from the plenum below. Designed to meet the highest standards and specifications, both the theatre seats and the cinema seats call upon five different colours from the Main Line Plus range from Camira Fabrics. The overall result is a tiered flooring and seating solution that perfectly complements this forward-looking and progressive ‘Home’ for arts.
